To experience a 'bush' safari is the usually the main reason people from all over the world visit Africa - and in southern Africa the visitor is certainly spoilt for choice. From the world renowned Kruger National Park to the remarkable Okavango Delta, the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls to the desert of Namibia and the rhino's of Hluhluwe-Umfolosi to the malaria-free regions of the Waterberg, Eastern and Western Cape - there is an option for everyone, and to suit all pockets.
Kruger National Park
One of the world's great game reserves, the Kruger boasts a greater number and variety of wildlife than any other similar sized area in Africa. With 520 species of birds, 146 mammals and 114 reptiles the Kruger remains South Africa's premier game reserve. There are a number of luxury and medium priced lodges situated in the unfenced western region of the park.
Botswana
With visitor numbers restricted, lodges accessible only by light aircraft and a huge variety of wildlife within a diverse number of ecological areas, Botswana is the ultimate safari destination in southern Africa. The Okavango Delta, a 15 000 sq km flood plain visible from space, provides a lifeline to this otherwise arid region. The sandy plains and ochre dunes of the Kalahari, Moremi and Chobe Game Reserves as well as the Kwando and Linyanti River systems provide the visitor with an incredible range of safari options and wildlife experiences.
Victoria Falls
Mosi oa Tunya ('the smoke that thunders') is on the great natural wonders of the world. Best viewed at the end of summer when the mighty Zambezi River is in full flood the falls are 100m high and 1,7km long while the spray from the falls can be seen up to 30km away - a 'must do' add-on to any southern African safari.
Namibia
Sparsely populated with varied and dramatic landscapes, Namibia is a truly unique visitor experience. The expansive (23 000sq km) Etosha Game Reserve in the north is renowned for its wildlife. The ancient Namib Desert, in the west, has some of the highest sand dunes in the world that make for incredible photographic opportunities, the elephants in Damaraland walk up to 70km per day in search of food and water while the Kaokoland is home to some of the most amazing, desert-adapted, plants.
Kwazulu-Natal
Thirty percent of Africa's white and black rhino population has been protected in the Hluhluwe-Umfolosi National Park and various private game reserves. This sub-tropically lush and ecologically diverse region boasts 90 game parks and nature reserves, the highest mountains in South Africa, 2 world heritage sites and the most southerly coral reefs in Africa.
Eastern and Western Cape
These malaria free regions offer a wide variety of safari options that provide a relaxing escape from the city and are also ideal for families. The renowned Addo Elephant Park now boasts the 'big six' which includes whale watching on the coast and is an ideal extension to any Garden Route trip.
